Pakistan: Behind the Veil and into the World of Women’s Climbing
In 2011, Genevieve launched the Gear for Gals in Pakistan project to bring much needed women’s climbing equipment to the Pakistan Youth Outreach, an organization aiming to bring greater gender equality through training women as mountaineers and organizing all-women mountaineering expeditions in Pakistan. She traveled deep into Pakistan’s Karakorum Range to bring women’s climbing gear to the small mountain village of Shimshal, the location of the only women’s mountaineering schools. Genevieve spent time living with the Shimshal people, talking with the young women who participated in the mountaineering program and hearing how it changed their lives forever. This project was not just about climbing, it was about bringing greater rights to women in Pakistan. Climbing and the outdoors was just an avenue. Genevieve’s compelling presentation covers the challenges the Gear for Gals in Pakistan project faced and its ultimate successful outcome, the women’s climbing movement in Pakistan, and the insights she gained staying with a local herding family a 6 day walk from the Chinese border.

Queens of Sheeba: Women’s Travel Tips for the Middle East
Women travelers face unique situations and challenges traveling in the Middle East. Each country in the region has its own attitudes and customs regarding women. But, each country also provides women with a special opportunity to connect with the culture in ways their male counterparts cannot. With a little knowledge in hand, women can safety and confidently travel through the Arab countries, while also connecting with locals and sharing experiences that leave lasting memories. In this Speaker Program, Genevieve shares her intimate knowledge of the Middle East gathered from her time living Cairo, Egypt, backpacking through Oman, Jordan, the UAE, and Lebanon, and working in a number of Middle Eastern countries. She helps women both understand the region and how to travel safely throughout the countries while still connecting with locals and enjoying authentic and positive experiences. She includes plenty of humor in this presentation keeping the audience engaged and excited about the topic while still learning about the region and how to travel smarter as women throughout the Middle East.
